Materials & Finishes

The Specialist Medical Centre takes its design cues from the main hospital building, with a flat metal deck roof and simple wall planes and blades constructed using aluminium composite panelling and glazing, referencing but not directly copying the themes established in the hospital building.

  • The construction system is post tensioned concrete slabs and columns with lightweight framed infill cladding, providing flexible accommodation space which can be readily adapted to a variety of internal layouts and functions as required.
  • The scale is consistent with the health campus environment and the form and colours of the building will provide a significant entry statement for the campus.
  • A contemporary palette of quality materials has been selected for the finishes to the common spaces and amenities areas.

Elevators

Two elevators are provided. One for passenger traffic and the second is provided for the movement of patients on stretchers, medical equipment and goods delivery. This elevator is 2350mm deep x 1750mm wide.

Access & Parking

The site is readily accessed via a new roundabout located on the existing health campus entry road which is connected to the Pacific Highway via a signalised intersection.

Distance from the Coffs Harbour CBD (Post Office) South to this New Specialist Medical Centre is just 3.7 kilometres giving easy access for patients and staff. For Teaching Doctors and students, the Specialist Medical Centre to the School of Health and Human Sciences at the Southern Cross University at Hogbin Drive, is 2.7 kilometres, just a short drive, while the Airport for visiting medicos is 4.7 kilometres to the East via the Pacific Highway, Stadium Drive and Hogbin Drive.

Other access features are:

  • Secure basement parking for 60 vehicles is provided with a further 140 uncovered spaces at ground level in the concrete paved external car park. A number of Spaces have been reserved by patients with requiring Disabled Access Parking close to the Main Entrance.
  • A drop-off area with a prominent roof canopy marks the main public entry to the building with a second entry at the rear of the building from the external car park.
  • A generous internal foyer links the two entries. This major public space assists orientation and way finding within the building.
  • The public foyer space is activated by the adjacent café and café terrace. Lifts and an ATM are also conveniently located in this area.
  • Disabled access is provided by lifts and ramps to meet the requirements of Australian Standard 1428.1.
  • Concrete fire stairs linking all floors are provided to meet the requirements of the Building Code of Australia.

Security

Passive and active security measures have been incorporated into the building design as follows:

  • Lighting around the building perimeter plus reducing the number of hides by virtue of the simple planes of the building form.
  • CCTV surveillance in the basement car park and around the building. For night work the key card system for access to basement parking provides an additional level of security for staff.

Two elevators are provided. One for passenger traffic and the second is provided for the movement of patients on stretchers, medical equipment and goods delivery. This elevator is 2350mm deep x 1750mm wide.
